A Few Must Sees On Your Berlin Itinerary
Berlin is the capital of Germany, and a city of rich history. It is the site of many significant historical events, and the location of a great deal of architectural grandeur. There are many things to do and see in Berlin, including eating, entertainment, drinking (drinking is an activity anywhere you go in Germany) and sightseeing. And when you are sightseeing in Berlin, there are five things that you really should not miss.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe: This memorial was opened to the public in May 2005. It is conveniently located near downtown Berlin and has an easy access to public transportation. It is a reminder of the atrocities done to people during the Second World War. It dauntingly reminds us that the same could happen again if we forget the screams of past.
East Side Gallery. This is a mile long stretch of the Berlin wall. It is the longest portion of the wall still standing, and it covered with artwork. There are many emotional and political statements on the wall, contributing to the powerful feelings evoked by looking at it. There are many colors, and it contrasts sharply with the surrounding cityscape.
Charlottenburg Palace: This ornate palace was built in the 17th century for Sophie Charlotte as her summer residence. It is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture. Though you won't need a guided tour to see the grand rooms yet it is recommended for its delightful grounds and the splendid sites. These tours are generally in the German lanugage but information sheets are provided in other languages.
St. Nicholas Church is very old, and an excellent monument of the changes that have taken place over the centuries. Different features have been added to it through history, including a presbytery and two ornamental towers. It was hit during World War II, and the un-restored and partially ruined church serves as a reminder of the destruction of war. This is the place where Berlin and Colln agreed to become Berlin in 1307.
Brecht Weigel Museum was the home of playwright Bertolt Brecht and his actress wife Helene Weigel. The house is an interesting tour that records the history of the Berliner Ensemble, and epic theater company. Since it is located in East Berlin, it is also a good source of interesting information of the Berlin theatrical scene. It has a huge collection of manuscripts and printed works. You can get good food in the Keller, a restaurant located downstairs.
Potsdam's Gardens: If you want to have a day out amongst the beautiful sights and fragrant smells then do consider traveling 25 minutes from Berlin to Potsdam in S-Bahn (the train). You can relax in the various beautiful gardens and spend a whole fulfilling day over there.
There is plenty more to see in Berlin, but these are some things of historical and cultural value in Berlin that should not be missed.
