A guide to pubs in Murcia. (Supplemental)
The second brief guide to bars in Murcia City.
Going for a drink in Muria City is a learning experience if you're British.
If you like you can do the 'Brit' thing (Go out at 7.00p.m. and be back home by
12.00 ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. Most of the bars in Murcia City don't show their true character until around 1.00a.m. so you'll miss a lot of action if that's the way you choose to go.
Here's a tip: To get the best out of your evening in Murcia change your body timer to a Murcian night out by simply changing your watch by a couple of hours. Don't consider going to a "real" Murcia bar before 10.00pm. Before that, if you want to be out and about why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (next to the Cathedral) and admire the floodlit Cathedral. from there. You could thenwalk to the Hotel Rincon de Pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a cocktail in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the few places in Murcia where you can see Murcia's original Arab Walls.
This is a follow up article in this series. Here's a few more of some of the more interesting bars in Murcia.
Super 8 (Avenida Ciclista Mariano Rojas, Local 16, Molina del Segura.) Not far from Murcia centre, Super 8 is an chilled out
bar/club which features a live band each week. It draws a youngish, predominately indie type bunch and opens from 12.30am-6.30am
La Codiga (Gran Vía Alfonso X ) One of the more "local" bars in Murcia. Latin rhythms abound in this club.
Chest wigs and medallions are optional ;-)
Gospel (15 Enrique Villar. Tel. 968 203 234) The young crowd hit this lively city centre pub. The sounds range from
Blues to Rock to Jazz. Stays open until 3am.
El Mentidero (3 Saavedra Fajardo. Tel. 968 223 533) You're struggling to escape from techno music in Spanish clubs and El Mentidero is the same as the rest. Lively bar with a dance floor and is open till 3am. It's near the
University.
DNC Dance Club (Puerta Nueva, Edificio Centrofama. Tel. ) This place claims to be the only true club in Murcia city centre. Located in the busy university zone. Buzzing place during term time. DNC plays standard pop as well as house music against a backdrop of trendy décor. You get a free first drink with your admission.Utopia (7 Velázquez.) Very different bar and is described by the owners as a bar-theatre. The fascinating décor imitates theatrical scenery. Utopia has all kinds of acts on stage ranging from musicians, small bands, to actors reading monologues. After the live stuff it's mainly rock, blues and Britpop music.
Tasca Gao (17 Calle Canovas del Castillo.) Bouncing place that is famous for miniature bottles of spirits (duh.. hurts my
head..) . Popular venue for people on stag and hen parties in fancy dress at the weekends.
Los Cuatro Gatos (12 Calle Alfaro.) is near to the Roman Theatre. Here we have live music and sometimes features comedians on stage. Nice place this.
Kennedy Bar (Callejón de Berruezo.) Lively Irish bar that's busy all day. Get down here for some Guinness and English soccer. Fantastic variety of other beers as well. They have live comedy shows on
Wednesdays. Buy one get one free on drinks when football matches are on.
Fuente Alamo (Carretera N301, Fuente Álamo.) Unusually for pubs in Murcia City this is a Western themed pub with
saloon bars and coyboy gear. It's actually a really good night out if you're in the mood for a lively one!!.
Mundaka Club (26 Carretera Santa Catalina.) Maybe the most buzzing club in Murcia City, playing
Dance and seventies disco. Three rooms with different styles that accommodate most types. Fridays and Saturdays are from 2am-6.30am. (See what I mean about coming out later?)
La Puerta Falsa (5 Calle San Martín de Porres.) Nice relaxed bar which offers music
from local talent. Also has really good exhibitions of paintings on the walls.
Kallejon (Calle Ceuti, Poligono Insustrial Atalayas) Nearly all the clubs in Murcia City are on the outskirts due to noise considerations. Kallejon is no exception. There are two dance floors where you can hear music ranging from Spanish pop to commercial techno
rubbish (only my opinion). It only opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights ('tillate).
Sala Univesal (1 Avenida Juan Carlos.)Brash and exciting - a famous bar in Murcia City. There are several rooms playing
different sounds so something for most here...
Sala Fluid (Orilla de Azarbe.) Another techno rubbish joint that's open until around 6am. Maybe get some strong coffee
before entering if you want to make it through the night. Dazzling array of cocktails on offer, but take it easy or the legs may not last the night..
That should be enough for article two on bars in Murcia City. There's plenty to be going on with anyway.. Should you go to any other Murcia pubs that you think deserve a mention then email me and let me have the lowdown. Cheers!!
