Your Personal Pep Talk

An old adage says that no one will love you until you first love yourself. That can be tricky to do, because you may not be able to see all of your own wonderful qualities. Positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool in improving your self-esteem. The easiest way to do this is through self talk exercises.

Self-talk is basically a little voice inside your head that keeps a running commentary on everything you do. The voice should be telling you that you're doing a good job, you look great, and that you're smart, friendly and likeable. If you suffer from low self-esteem that little voice is likely a critical one, reminding you of all the reasons that you fail. Low self-esteem can leave you feeling inferior to many people, in many ways.

The first thing that you need to do is understand that the nagging, critical voice is wrong. You certainly do possess all of the qualities you need to be a confident person and lead a fulfilling life however you may need to tell yourself over and over until you realize that it is the truth. This is one of the hardest exercises for people with low self-esteem to do, because they may not believe it at first. Use positive affirmation and self talk to change what you believe, and you will attain the good things that you deserve.

Self-talk determines how you act toward others and how they, in turn, will react to you. If you tell yourself that you're truly confident, you'll act in a way that inspires trust in other people. On the other hand, self-talk that convinces you of uncertainty and a lack of confidence will cause you to act in a way that will create doubt in others.

Facing that little voice in your head is not easy, but it must be done if you want to break the vicious cycle. When you hear the negative messages, you must react to them by reinforcing your own positive messages. Positive self talk is the first and most important step in improving your own self-esteem and self worth.

Changing your self image can be a big job. If you'd like extra help or more information, there is a wide selection of self-help CDs, books and videos available on the market. Support groups and self-improvement seminars are great ways to find the personal backing you need to succeed. Use the Internet and search your library or book store for the resources that are available to you.

If you try self-improvement methods without success, consider speaking with a professional therapist or counselor. An expert in self-esteem improvement can provide the extra boost your confidence needs. Combine the strength of personal counseling with the added reinforcement of self-help tools, and you will greatly improve your chances of success.

You are a worthy, valuable person. Your time is also valuable, so don't waste it by paying attention to a critical voice in your head. Take control of your self talk and you will be able to take control of your life. Only then will you begin to live the life that you deserve.
