How to Accomplish Personal Development Goals Easily
Everyone has goals, and we all need them to achieve something in our lives. Goals are like carrots pulling us forward when things get a little rough out there. They give us answers to resistance and challenges big and small that we face daily. And personal development goals are the most critical of all.
The easy part is setting personal development goals. The really hard part is achieving them. One of the reasons that many people fail to reach their personal development goals is that too often they set fuzzy images instead of clear goals. Some people also set too many goals all at once, or they set target dates that are too far in the future.
When setting personal development goals, you need to clearly define what you want to achieve. It's great to want to lose weight, but you need to set a clear goal. Decide how much weight you want to lose, and make that your goal. Choose a number of pounds or kilograms, and make sure it's an achievable goal, so you're not setting yourself up for failure. Once you've set your goal of say, ten pounds, you can go ahead and establish and diet and exercise plan that will help you to accomplish your goal.
The second step to meeting your challenge is in setting the parameters. You've already established that you want to lose ten pounds. You have an exercise and diet plan ready to go. Now, give yourself a time limit. Let's say that you want to lose those ten pounds in two months. Five pounds a month. About a pound a week. That seems easily manageable. So now, you know the number of pounds you'll lose, you have a realistic time frame in place and you know exactly how you'll go about achieving success.
So the first step is done. You have established a personal development goal, and are taking the path to achieving it.
Don't set your personal development goals too high or too far out of reach. If you set unattainable goals and you're not successful, you'll feel like a failure. This feeling can have a negative affect on your self-esteem, and on your life in general. Don't go there.
And when you work hard and reach your goal, don't forget to give yourself a reward! A reward makes your focus and commitment worth something else besides the great accomplishment itself. You don't have to spend a bunch of money or eat a giant cheesecake that will start you gaining weight again, for example. Why not take a rewarding walk in a park, have a glass of good wine, or take yourself out to a matinee movie? Reward yourself for sticking to your plan and meeting your goal.
Having achieved your first personal development goal, now you will be ready to set another one. Always set your next goal the same way you did the first, with clear, achievable results in a decent time frame. And who knows where this will all lead? In 5 - 10 years you will be shocked by where you have ended up. Setting small, achievable goals, one after the other, can lead you to heights you would not have imagined in your former life.
