How to buy a rifle scope

This article provides an insight on the topic of rifle scopes characteristics and can also serve as a buying guide.

As defined in wikipedia.org, a rifle scope is a device used to give an accurate point of aim for weapons such as firearms, air-guns and crossbows. Coating is applied on the surface of the objective lens to achieve less light loss and glare. Three types of coating are available - fully, multi or fullymulti coated.

Other important characteristics include: eye relief, field of view, length, weight, light transmission. Eye relief can be defined as the distance that a scope can be held away from the eye and still give a full view. Larger field of view means you will be able to see a larger area (width). The light transmission determines how long you can hunt with the scope, in which time frames - dusk, dawn.

A hunter's success on the filed pretty much depends on the quality of his riflescope, considering all the advantages it provides. The first and most obvious advantage is that rifle scopes bring closer the distant targets and objects surrounding them. Another one is that they allow you to hunt at night, because of their night-vision capabilities.

The buying decision must be influenced by your individual needs and requirements. Of course, knowledge can make a big difference here, therefore you must be aware of the different parameters given in the description of a rifle scope. The magnification power of a rifle scope is denoted by the number before 'x', for example - 4x, 6x, 4-16x, etc.

The level of magnification can be changed manually on some models, and if available, this option is denoted with 3-9x40, for example, where 3-9 is the magnification range. The number after 'x' stands for the diameter of the objective in millimeters. When the lens is larger, more light enters the scope resulting in a brighter image.

The disadvantage of having a larger lenses is that makes the whole rifle scope heavier, while you still have to match it with your gun and ammunition. Image brightness and resolution are directly related. A high-quality rifle scope combines high brightness and high resolution, which results in a very clear image of the target.

The leading manufacturers of rifle scopes are Leupold, Redfield,Burris, Simmons, Tasco, Zeiss, Weaver. Each one of those brands has an extensive line of models that differ in cost and quality. Therefore, give yourself some more time to read as many reviews as you can, so that you can end up making the right choice.
