Myspace goes Political
MySpace, the most popular online social network, said they have begun a political section as a precursor to the upcoming elections.
This Myspace creation will be called the Impact Channel. The site, owned by NewsCorpwill bring to the space pages for 10 presidential candidates -- five Democrats and five Republicans.
The Myspace network attracted about 60 million U.S. users in December, says comScore MediaMetrix, and about 90 million visitors from around the world.
Increasingly, presidential candidates have gone online to use the viral nature of the internet to communicate directly with voters. Internet and technically aware young voters, like MySpace's teens and young adults, have been notoriously hard to reach using the traditional media of traditional print radio and TV.
Myspacers are tempted with familiar code to copy candidates' virtual election banners or badges to to their personal profile MySpace pages and to become part of online money machine for campaigns.
Although the Impact Channel will first feature presidential candidates, it has room to grow as a conduit for world political thought for elections of all kindsas well as charitable efforts.
The new political channel creates an unparalleled communication platform to introduce political candidates and civic organizations to the site's thriving users. Hot on the heels of other Myspace channels like MySpace Music and a Myspace video channel, this developing channel will enable the community to learn regarding the politicians, experience the political process online and offline, and uncover issues and organizations that they consider important.
It seems highly likely that the impact channel will play an important role in the upcoming election.
