How to Select a Domain Name

A domain name is the name by which Internet users get into your website. It is the text name that is equivalent to the numeric IP address of a PC on the Internet. Since that is your identity on which the success of your business depends, it should be exclusive and reflective of your business.

Regardless of whether your business is big or small, you need a domain name to be successful. After all, your business depends on sales and sales depend on publicity and credibility. Your domain name helps you do that. It makes your customers feel comfortable while doing business with you. Moreover, the search engines give importance to the home page of a particular domain.

Not that your business depends entirely on a domain name, but it does go a long way in determining success. So you must choose a domain name intelligently. First, you must select a proper register web address from the various options like .net, .org, .biz and others. However, ?.com? is the most popular extension and also it lends more credibility to your business. You can just use alphabets, numbers, and dashes as domain names but make sure there are no spaces and special symbols, because they are not permitted. Domain names are not case sensitive either.

A good domain name should be short and simple; not long, ambiguous and confusing. Ideally, it should not exceed 14-16 characters. You should spend a lot of time and use your creativity to think of a catchy domain name. Make sure you spell it correctly and include at least two keywords in it. Keywords help search engines to rank them.

You can get ideas about domain names from the old domain names that are no longer in use. However, this can be a risky proposition if the domain name is in use. That can land you into a copyright infringement issue. So, be very careful while choosing a domain name from the Internet.

You must avoid registering domain names with your web host. This is so because if you decide to change your host, you will need to move your domain too. Trust me, it is a great hassle. So it is better to split both aspects.

You can even go in for more than one domain name. You can register your company?s name in full as well as in short. There are people who register wrongly spelt names of their websites. This way, you can be sure you have them all and no one else can tread in your domain.

You must ask around and take a vote for the best name. Do not decide on your own. There is a storehouse of ideas around you. Take advantage of that. Ask your friends, relatives, colleagues, employees and others for ideas.

Also take the price factor into consideration. Since there is much competition the prices have come down quite a bit. You can make a decent bargain if you spend some time and shop around.
