Discover How You Can Qualify For A College Scholarship

If you already have a son or daughter in college, then you already know that an arm and a leg would be cheap compared to the REAL costs of college. In other words, it is expensive, and you have found that it is more expensive that the most conservative and detailed budget planning you could have done. If you have a son or daughter that will be going to college soon, it is never too late to start your budgeting and planning process, and then tack on at least about another 30% for expenses that you did not plan for.

This is an exercise that students and parents have been going through for a number of years and the total figure that you arrive at is always much less than the actual cost, and this is virtually guaranteed. But there are two fundamental problems with this. First, you may have encouraged your son or daughter to go to a cheaper college or maybe a community college to keep costs lower. If this suggestion is being made simply from a cost perspective, I would encourage you to re-examine the situation. Todays world is a tough place to be, and having the best college education possible is going to give your son or daughter the best chances of rising to the top after they graduate.

But even more importantly, the total costs of sending your son or daughter to college does not need to be as astronomically high as the figures would indicate. This is because there are literally tons of scholarships available that your son or daughter CAN qualify for. While some scholarships only provide a few hundred dollars, other scholarships and grants can provide a full ride, including tuition, books, and housing. And there is no limit, legal or otherwise, on the number of scholarships or grants that your son or daughter can apply for AND be awarded. Note that while a student loan needs to be repaid after graduation, grants and scholarships do NOT need to be repaid, and that is a huge difference.

As you research the availability of college scholarships and college grants, be fully aware that like most things, there are scams out there. You should never be required to pay a fee simply to find out if you qualify for a particular scholarship. While it happens, this requirement is rare and should be avoided, or at least looked at very carefully. And despite popular beliefs and myths, college scholarships and college grants are not only awarded to the top football player, the star soccer player, the musical genius, etc. Nor is award determination based solely on financial need as it was in years past. A majority of scholarships simply require the student to apply for them!

One of the truly ridiculous truths is that there are hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of college scholarships and grants that go unawarded each year simply because nobody applied for them! One of the things to keep in mind is that businesses and corporations put out these scholarships and grants as a tax write-off, as well as to encourage students to pursue an area of study that aligns with their industry. (Although pursuing something in that industry is rarely a requirement). So it only makes sense to understand that if the business or corporation does not award their scholarship, then they do not get the tax write-off. The biggest thing you can do to be considered for a college scholarship or college grant is to get out there and fill out as many applications as you can!
